Learning Experience Goal:

I will be able to analyze the history and effects of the relationship between the United States and Israel.

6.1 The Current U.S. President on Israel

The President of the United States at the time of writing this curriculum is Joe Biden (46th U.S. President). Watch this collection of video clips to determine where Biden stands on the position of Israel and respond to these questions:

1. Based on these clips, what is Biden’s position on Israel and Palestine? Why do you think this is where he stands?

2. Are you surprised at Biden’s stance? Why or why not?

3. Do these video clips tell the whole story? How could you investigate further?

Choose 3 or more of the topics to investigate. Then respond:

  1. What topics did you choose and why?

  2. What is the connection between the U.S. & Israel, according to this source?

  3. What are your thoughts on this topic?

6.3 How is the U.S. Involved?

U.S.-ISRAEL RELATIONS

“The United States was the first country to recognize Israel as a state in 1948, and the first to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2017. Israel is a great partner to the United States, and Israel has no greater friend than the United States.  Americans and Israelis are united by our shared commitment to democracy, economic prosperity, and regional security. The unbreakable bond between our two countries has never been stronger.”

Fact Sheet U.S. – Israel Economic Relationship

United States Embassy in Israel, site accessed March 2024

——————————————————————————————————————————

  • Since The United States-Israel Free Trade Agreement, established in 1985, trade between the countries has increased ten-fold to $49 billion in 2016.

  • Israelis now invest close to $24 billion in the United States, nearly triple what it was a decade earlier.

  • Israel & the U.S. have committed to partner in: civil aviation, public health and medical science, energy, including renewable energy, space cooperation, transportation cooperation, focused on autonomous vehicles.

  • A “steady stream of governors, mayors, and other state and local leaders” travel to Israel.

  • The U.S.-Israeli economic and commercial relationship includes: IT, bio-tech, life sciences, health care solutions, energy, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, defense industries, cyber-security, and aviation, to name just a few sectors.

  • Critical parts of leading American high-tech products are invented and designed in Israel, including Cisco, Intel, Motorola, Applied Materials, and HP are just a few examples.

  • Israel is home to more than 2,500 U.S. firms employing some 72,000 Israelis, according to an estimate by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

  • “Water is another area where the United States and Israel are increasingly working together.”

The Massachusetts Example
The New England-Israel Business Council released a study that shows that Israeli-founded businesses have generated about 9,000 jobs in Massachusetts alone, and indirectly support an additional 18,000. These companies represent nearly four percent of the state’s GDP. And that is just one state.

In Beersheva – less than an hour’s train ride from Tel Aviv –American and Israeli companies are working side-by-side at CyberSpark. It is a fast-growing, world-class, hi-tech office park, adjacent to a top academic institution, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and not far from where critical public-sector institutions, such as the IDF’s cyber and intelligence units, will soon be located. This unique eco-system is rapidly attracting more American companies to take part in developing the defenses that will protect the new economy.

This Government has been informed that a Jewish state has been proclaimed in Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the provisional Government thereof.

The United States recognizes the provision government as the de facto authority of the new State of Israel.

Why does the United States support Israel “no matter what?”

Colonialism

  • Settler Colonialism: Both the United States and Israel are settler colonial societies of European origin that exist because of the violent removal and replacement of indigenous populations. Settler colonialism is based on the belief that the colonizing group is superior to the indigenous group; both Israel and the United States were built on this belief and this belief continues to show up in every part of society.

  • Exploitation of Resources for Profit: Both the United States and Israel regularly exploit and profit off of the natural resources in the lands they colonize. The Middle East is an incredibly important global source of oil, including a recently discovered oil reserve off of Gaza’s coast which is being extracted by a British company.

  • Military Power: Backed from the beginning by Europe and increasingly over time by the U.S., Israel has grown into a strong military power. Israel is able to carry out U.S. funded actions in the region with no consequences and Palestine has become testing grounds for new and experimental weapons. There is a lot of money involved in weapons development, and both Israel and the United States profit.

American Zionism

  • Christian Zionism: Not only Jews can be Zionists, and in fact there a very influential Christian Zionist movement has existed in Britain and in the U.S. since before Israel existed. Christian Zionists believe that the establishment of a Jewish “homeland” in “Israel” will fulfill a Biblical prophecy and bring Jesus Christ back to Earth as its king. These early Zionists were very politically active in their support of Israel, and this support continues today.

  • Jewish Zionism: The United States has the second largest population of Jews in the world today, after Israel. There is a strong familial and cultural connection between Zionist Jews in both settler states; so much so that Jewish youth are recruited from the U.S. to visit Israel, all expenses paid.

  • Zionism in Politics: There are a number of Zionist lobbying organizations, who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to convince politicians to vote their way, in support of Israel. Because of this, many politicians in both major political parties- the Democrats and the Republicans-support Israel without question.

Global Affairs

  • Cold War: The birth of Israel took place at the start of the Cold War, which was a period of extreme tension between the United States and the Soviet Union (which included Russia), along with other countries that found themselves having to take sides with the capitalist Americans or the communist Soviets. The Cold War took place following WWII, after the U.S. had used the atomic bomb, so nuclear weapons were in the mix, heightening the danger. Although the Soviet Union and the U.S. didn’t fight directly, they did engage in a number of proxy wars, in which they supported opposing sides in a conflict. For example, in 1967, two Soviet-backed countries (Egypt & Syria) attacked Israel in efforts to regain land taken in 1948. The U.S. stepped in and supplied military support to Israel, which was ultimately victorious. From the 1970s onward, the U.S. military spending to Israel has increased steadily. Some argue that the Cold War never ended, since the tensions between Russia and the United States persist.

  • Strategic Location: Israel is in a strategic location, at the crossroads of Asia, Europe, and Africa. It is surrounded by majority Muslim and Arab countries and is often described as the only “democracy” in the Middle East. Since the U.S. is way across the world, Israel serves as the United States’ entry point into the Middle East. It has often used Israel in deals that involve the region, such as the current India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. Billions of dollars and both private corporations and government-based companies are wrapped up in these deals. In this particular deal, the corridor cuts right through Gaza in occupied Palestine.

6.5 Reflect on your learning

  1. Is the United States right to stand with Israel, no matter what? Explain.

  2. What should people do when they strongly disagree with the actions of their government leaders? Give some specific examples.

  3. Now what? After finishing this Investigation, what will you do with the knowledge you’ve gained? Has it changed your thinking about the world in any way? Why or why not?
